Helpful Tips for Your Next Move
Helpful Tips For Your Next Move
Preparing for a move is stressful, exciting, overwhelming, and tiring all wrapped into one. Whether you have months to prepare or weeks, there are plenty of things you can do to make the move as effective and stress-free as possible. All you need to do is follow the smart tips outlined in this post that will help prior to any move.
Pack a Weekend Bag
One of the most important things you can do is pack a weekend bag. This might seem weird to you right now, but it will definitely be helpful during the move. The bag should have a change or two of clothes, a toothbrush, your medication, pajamas and any other items you might need in a 24 to 48 hour span. A wrench can be thrown into your move without notice. A weekend bag will help you get through the issue.
Color Coordinate Boxes
An important tip that many people use is to properly label their boxes. Take it to the next step by color coordinating your boxes. You can do this using sticky notes you tape to the boxes with clear tape. Each room should be assigned a color.
Bonus tip: Instead of labeling a box as “kitchen,” be specific. Label it “kitchen – dinnerware.” If you need cups, you know they won’t be in that box.
Pack an “Open First” Box
Not many people will do this but it can be a lifesaver during a move. An “open first” box should contain toilet paper, soap, drinking glasses, towels, and any other necessities you will need the minute you arrive at your new home.
Clear Walls Early
Clear the walls of your current house at least one week prior to moving out. This gives you plenty of time to repair any damage left by picture frames, nails, screws, or other items used to hang photos and art.
Pack Heavy Items in Suitcases
It’s a really good idea to pack the heaviest items you have in suitcases, not boxes. Suitcases will be able to withstand the weight better than boxes. These items include canned goods, books, and any collections that are heavy. Packing these items in suitcases also makes it easier to transport them since most have wheels.
Trash Bags for Hanging Clothes
Quite possibly one of the best tips you can follow is to transport your hanging clothes in trash bags. Divide the clothes into groups of five or ten items and cover them using a black contractor trash bag with built-in tie wraps. The trash bags act as a garment bag, helping to protect your clothes during the move and are ready to hang as soon as you get to your new home.
Buy Extra Materials
If you are doing the packing yourself, buy enough material that you will never run out. You don’t want to get stuck for boxes, tape, labels, or packing peanuts in the middle of a move.
Take Pictures
Before you unplug all the wires from your TV be sure to take some pictures of how they are hooked up in the rear. Taking a couple of pictures to document the connections will take mere minutes and doing so might save you hours of frustration, especially if you have a more intricate system than most.
